About Me – Joanne Poon, CHRP Researcher

Received my Masters degree in History from UBC, I have a strong interest in Overseas Chinese history and the history of Chinese Canadian. I have been involved in many community projects, such as the public display on the history of Vancouver’s Chinatown and the study of Chinatown historical buildings in Vancouver. I am also serving the Board of Directors of the Chinese Canadian Historical Society. In this coming year, I will concentrate on working on the Chinese letters in the Yip Sang Collection and the Chung Collection held in the City of Vancouver Archives and UBC.  I first came across of these Chinese letters in 1996-97 and was fascinated by them. Written in the early 1900s, these letters give glimpses of the lives of the Chinese pioneers in Canada and that of their families in China. I am excited to be part of the Chinese Canadian Stories research project, and have a chance to revisit these letters. In this blog, I will be documenting the translation of the Chinese letters and share my research experience. Stay tuned!
