Chinese Canadian Stories: Uncommon Histories from a Common Past
is a UBC Library and SFU Library initiative,
funded by Citizenship and Immigration Canada’s
Community Historical Recognition Program

Our Goals

Our Web portal, Chinese Canadian Stories: Uncommon Histories from a Common Past, is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary project led by the University of British Columbia. It recognizes the experiences of ethno-cultural communities affected by historical wartime measures and immigration restrictions in Canada, and promotes these communities’ contributions to Canada. Chinese Canadian Stories is the one-stop Web portal for Chinese Canadian heritage. Read more

Project Updates

Learn about the latest research in Chinese Canadian Studies

Some exciting and groundbreaking research is featured in Chinese Canadian Stories. Joanne Poon is creating a set of Taishan-to-English words and phrases; in one of her first blog posts, she translates a letter sent to Vancouver from China via Hong Kong. Follow her research journey here.

In process: 3D imaginings of a (Chinese) Canadian town

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be Chinese in a small BC town at the end of the 19th century? In spring 2012, you’ll be able to find out, thanks to students in the Masters of Digital Media program at the Great Northern Way Campus. A fully immersive interactive experience is being developed for the project, which is inspired by Cedar and Bamboo, a film that explores the rich and complex relationships between Aboriginal and Chinese people in British Columbia. Project Gold Mountain will be accessible on the CHRP Web portal for users to journey into the past and explore life histories, collect artifacts and play challenging mini-games.

When history comes to you…

Find Chinese Canadian history at your fingertips! In spring 2012, mobile museums will travel on a cross-Canada tour to bring the past to life – a collaborative effort between students from UBC’s Mechanical Engineering, Integrated Engineering, Architecture and Arts departments and faculties. Through provocative and interactive touchscreen technology, we connect users to key moments in Chinese Canadian history. Touch, see and hear history in the making!
